Bopping will kill you.
Of course, I don’t mean that bopping will literally kill you, but it will prevent you from truly living.
“Bopping” is the term we use at Rent Sons to refer to a life lived with no direction. Bopping is the opposite of intentional living. It means being reactive, impulsive, and passive…when you’re existing for the sole purpose of surviving, instead of building a life that’s challenging and purpose-driven.

There was one day back in 2016, where I remember looking at my reflection in the mirror at the gym. I had woken up late, wasted most my morning, and barely finished a terrible workout. I was living in my mom’s basement, totally lost about what I should do. Should I move out? Should I continue AQUA? Should I try to save my broken romantic relationship? The questions had hammered at me for weeks and I was paralyzed by indecision.
This kind of thinking is WAY too common today and we think that’s a serious problem. We are passionate about disrupting this norm and helping young people embrace intentional living. We see ourselves as building more than just a business; we’re creating an incubator where young people can gain practical skills while figuring out what they want to do with their life.
What is intentional living?
It’s chasing a vision for your life, a mission. It’s thinking seriously about the kind of person you want to be, how you want to spend your time, and how you contribute to use the talents you have to society. It’s about pushing yourself beyond the limits you’ve created for yourself.
Intentional living is knowing when to say yes and when to say no. It’s thinking seriously about the media you consume, the people you spend time with, the way you schedule out the days of the week and hours of the day. It’s challenging yourself to constantly improve.
Bopping never felt more clear for me than that day at the gym. I realized I needed to man up, to make some tough decisions and move forward. I knew that if I didn’t make a change, it would only get worse. I left the gym and in a single day, I closed AQUA, broke up with my girlfriend, moved out of my mom’s basement, and moved to Providence. I decided to retake control of my life.
How do you stop bopping around?
Get out of your comfort zone. Challenge the thoughts that are handicapping your growth. It may seem overwhelming at first…facing your fears and doubts, dreaming big, focusing and ignoring distractions; humbling yourself to learn, embracing community, how to love others. But just take it one day at a time. One step at a time, one job at a time, and slowly but surely you’ll start becoming the person you want to be.
