Book That Trip

Oct 30, 2018 | Updates

This past weekend, I got to take a random trip to Nova Scotia (following Corey’s foot steps). Have to say, my friend Galen and I got super blessed. Randomly it was one of the best swells while we were there and the weather was amazing. It was say 4-5 meters, eh? I got to ride the biggest left of my life which then lead to one of the biggest poundings of my life but hey, I’m alive writing this so its all good.

I love traveling because it allows me to meet new people, experience new cultures, and see new beauty. I think its critical, even to take a trip to somewhere close you haven’t been, to just remove yourself from the day to day, allow yourself to dream big for your life, then go back ready to crush your next “season”.

Before I started Rent Sons, I went to Puerto Rico to reset my mind. I’m not sure if I didn’t go on that trip I would have had the focus to build the company in the first place. Coming out of my last company was a lot and needed some down time to just do things that have nothing to do with running a business. Time just to read, journal, pray and surf my brains out was extremely effective for my work when I get home.

Theres a great story about P/PC from the book “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People”.,204,203,200_QL70_&dpSrc=srch

The story goes there was a poor farmer who discovers one day that one of his hens was laying golden eggs. Each day, another golden egg until it made the farmer very wealthy. With his wealth came greed and impatience so he decided to kill the hen to get all the golden eggs at once. When he opened the hen, he discovered there was no golden eggs and he’s killed the source that produced the eggs.

The author continues to say, ” The story shows, true effectiveness is a function of two things: what is produced (the golden eggs) and the producing asset or capacity to produce (the goose).

If you adopt a pattern of life that focuses on golden eggs and neglects the goose, you will soon be without the asset that produces the golden eggs. On the other hand, if you only take care of the goose with no aim toward the golden eggs, you soon won’t have the wherewithal to feed yourself or the goose.

Effectiveness lies in the balance- what I call the P/PC balance, P stands for production of desired results, the golden eggs. PC stands for production capability, the ability or asset that produces the golden eggs.” (Covey 54).

In the hustle of accomplishing your dreams, you have to remember to take a day off each week, eat well, rest well, hang with loved ones well, and take time to take a trip here and there. You can’t go overboard otherwise nothing will get done, but finding the balance is key.

Effective time off gives you more energy while you are working. Truly, an energized 50H/week is better than a fried and burnt out 65 hour/week.

I tell my team, in my eyes, you’re doing a great job when you’ve crushed your work in an efficient time and then go and do something you love with people you love. I don’t want my team working to death but also don’t want them to be lazy and just live a vacation otherwise we will be out of business pretty quick. It’s the balance of P/PC. Effective work comes from managing P.

Therefore, fellow hustlers who overwork themselves…

Book a trip,

Have dinner with your friends,

Get up and go to the gym,

Read a book,

Love well.
