Fixed vs. Growth Mindset

Your Mind is a Powerful Thing

Fixed vs. Growth Mindset

According to media experts, we are living in the "Information Age". With the Internet reshaping every aspect of our life, it seems like the answer to any question we have is just a Google search away. We know a lot, but how much do we really understand?

At Rent Sons, we believe there’s value in seeking out wisdom, not just information.

When I came back to Rhode Island, I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to do. So I bought a journal and a few books and spent most of my time for the next six months in my living room reading. I highlighted and hand-copied excerpts from some of my favorite authors.

I know this sounds so basic, but those months I spent reading were some of the most challenging and enriching months of my life. I grew so much as a person. I’m convinced the simple act of sitting down with a book to read and take notes with pen and paper is one of the best things young adults can do to become more thoughtful, engaged members of society.

People with a fixed mindset believe they know everything already, so they rarely seek out advice. But those with a growth mindset approach life with curiosity, a desire to keep learning, and an ability to humble themselves and learn from criticism. They look at life as a formative journey, realizing that everything they learn and experience along the way can be part of growing into the person they’re meant to be.

This is one of the reasons we’ve designed a new journal program for our Sons and Daughters. Not only do they gain practical skills from hard work, connections with their Neighbors, and some extra money, but through this journal, they’re able to intentionally reflect through the various aspects of building a full life.

We launched this program because we wanted to create a space for young people to gain essential skills like managing money, building community and launching a career...just to name a few. We want to build a community of Sons and Daughters who are intentional about becoming the best version of themselves and willing to do all the learning necessary to get there.
